The Fearless RINO Killers

Sen. Lisa Murkowski Karen Millen Dresses, R-Alaska

The life of an Establishment Republican used to be simple. If you dodged scandal and could produce polls showing you could get re-elected, the party back in Washington would go to bat for you. You’d win. Your biggest threat came from a group called the Club for Growth, a well-funded political machine that bundles money and bombs the airwaves on behalf of candidates who challenge wrong-voting “Republicans in Name Only”—RINOs. Stay out of the Club for Growth’s way, and you’re safe.

This is not how it worked in Alaska.

Shortly after Alaska attorney Joe Miller launched his primary bid against Sen. Lisa Murkowski, he met with the Club for Growth to make his case for an endorsement. He didn’t get it. “We loved him,” says club spokesman Mike Connolly, “and we saw a path to victory for him, but we didn’t think it was terribly possible.” Miller got down to campaigning, raised money elsewhere, won other endorsements. Polls showed him closing the gap, but not enough for the club to change its mind. Then something surprising happened: On Election Day, Miller edged Murkowski by more than 1,600 votes. The Club for Growth responded by doing something it had declined to do months earlier: On Friday, three days after the election, it endorsed Miller.

Did the mighty club, the terror of Lincoln Chafee and Arlen Specter, err by failing to jump in sooner? Not really. The rules for punishing wayward Republicans haven’t changed. But there are more and more people eager to participate in the punishment, and they learn from every coup. Neither party appreciates how much animus exists between Republicans and their party, and how easy it can be to mobilize them against incumbents.

The Republican rank and file figured this out in the 2009 special election for New York’s 23rd District. Most of the media covered it as a black eye for the GOP, delivered by the Tea Party. After conservatives like Sarah Palin and Dick Armey endorsed the Conservative Party’s candidate over the GOP’s well-liked, moderate candidate, the moderate dropped out, and Democrats won the historically Republican seat just in time to get an extra vote for health care reform. At the time, RedState Editor Erick Erickson wrote a much-derided analysis, calling the race a “win” and arguing that “the GOP now must recognize it will either lose without conservatives or will win with conservatives.”

Nine months later, Republican insurgents have this stuff down to a science.

Stage 1: Shameless self-promotion. It really isn’t hard to convince Tea Party activists and conservative bloggers that your candidate is the real deal and his opponent is an establishment hack. You just need to be subtle about it and make it sound like you’re part of a groundswell. And you need to know which activists and bloggers have credibility. On June 16, Joe Miller proved he understood that by calling Erickson. Voila! Miller soon won an endorsement Hale Bob Dresses, in which Erickson told readers that Murkowski was “one of Mitch McConnell’s loyal lieutenants who he keeps in place to shut down people like Jim DeMint and the fiscal conservatives in the Senate.”

Sarah Palin, who endorsed Miller in June, name-checked him on Facebook. The Tea Party Express, which got onboard at the same time, churned out e-mails about Miller, announced its ad buys, and peddled news of this to influential blogs. Ace of Spades, a conservative blogger who’s built a following by being funny and training his guns on establishment Republicans, informed readers that he was getting sick of the Tea Party Express’s hard sell but that he supported Miller.

“I didn’t push Miller the first day they asked because of that annoyance,” he wrote. “But the second time, I realized what I was doing: I was taking out my resentment at the you-do-this-for-free conservative organizations against a very good candidate I would otherwise support, just because I was annoyed that it had been decided I was Mr. Cheap Date.”

U.S. seeks Indian assurance on Iran as Clinton vis

May 17th, 2012 by admin

KOLKATA, India (Reuters) – The United States will seek assurances that India will reduce its purchases of oil from sanctions-hit Iran during a visit by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to the South Asian giant this week, a senior U.S. official said on Sunday.

Clinton started a three-day trip to India on Sunday that will coincide with a visit by a large Iranian trade delegation, as India walks a tightrope of strengthening ties with ally the United States and sating its fast-growing energy needs.

During her visit, Clinton will also make the case for the country to open its supermarket sector to foreign chains such as U.S. giant Wal-Mart Stores – a major economic reform that has stalled under Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s government.

India has publicly rejected Western sanctions but has pushed refiners to cut imports of oil from Iran by 15-20 percent – enough, it hopes, to win a waiver from Washington.

The United States in March granted exemptions to Japan and 10 European Union nations from its sanctions, which are aimed at pressuring Iran to end its nuclear program. India and China, Iran’s biggest buyers of crude, remain on a list at risk if they do not cut oil imports “substantially”.

“Our assessment is India is making good progress but we really need to receive assurances that they are going to continue to make good progress,” a senior U.S. official, travelling with Clinton, told reporters.

The 56-member trade delegation, led by the president of Iran’s chamber of commerce Office 2010 Key, will also arrive on Sunday for another round of talks on how the two can trade via a rupee mechanism set up to skirt sanctions. A previous trade mission of Indian businesses to Iran in March had proved unproductive.

“These are not going to be strategic trades of any kind Buy Windows 7 Product Key,” the U.S. official said. “So I don’t think that we are too concerned about this, but we’ll obviously want to hear from the government what they see as the focus of this trade delegation.”

RETAIL REFORM SHELVED

Relations between the United States and India have blossomed in recent years, especially during the presidency of George W. Bush, which signed a landmark civilian nuclear pact with India. But irritants, especially over trade and investment barriers, have raised temperatures of late.

Clinton started her visit to India in Kolkata, the eastern city that is home to the most powerful ally in Singh’s coalition government Server 2003 Key, Mamata Banerjee, who had blocked the government’s push for retail liberalization last year.

The policy – which would allow foreign firms to buy a 51 percent share in an Indian retailer selling more than one brand – is one of several reforms that stalled in Singh’s second term, which has been overshadowed by scandals and a slowing economy.

Opponents of the reform say it would result in huge job losses in India’s retail sector, which is mostly made up of mom-and-pop stores.

“She’s also somebody who’s got quite a lot of influence,” the U.S. official said, when asked why Clinton was meeting Banerjee before heading to the capital.

“She put her foot down about the retail decision. Certainly we’d like to talk about that. My sense is that she’s not opposed to the retail overall, she just perhaps felt that she wasn’t properly consulted about it.”

Clinton arrives in India leaving behind her a stormy visit to China, which saw Beijing and Washington tussle over the fate of a blind Chinese human rights activist who had escaped 19 months of house arrest and fled to the U.S. embassy.

From Kolkata, Clinton will travel to New Delhi on Monday to meet Singh. Afghanistan and India’s controversial proposals on retroactive taxation are likely talking points, Indian sources told Reuters last week.

Washington – Officials West Point To Display Bin

May 17th, 2012 by admin

Washington – U.S. officials say the public will soon be able to read some of Osama bin Laden’s last written or typed words — made available by the U.S. Army’s Combating Terrorism Center at West Point military academy this week. replica watches

Navy SEALs gathered the documents when they raided bin Laden’s compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan replica watches, on May 2 last year.

The trove included correspondence between the terror leader and his far flung affiliates replica watches, and a diary written in bin Laden’s own hand.

Intelligence officials say the trove shows how the terror group works and evidence that bin Laden was helping plot attacks on American targets.

The officials spoke anonymously because they were not authorized to speak publicly. It was unclear Monday whether the documents would be available online or at a library.

German unions turn up volume on pay rise demands

May 17th, 2012 by admin

BERLIN (Reuters) – German labor leaders urged May Day demonstrators on Tuesday to fight for big pay rises after a decade of restraint that had seen wages in crisis-hit southern Euro zone nations soar.

The head of the powerful IG-Metall union, demanding a 6.5 percent rise, described an offer of 3 percent over 14 months as a farce. From Hamburg in the north to Stuttgaqrt in the south, the mood of members rallying in sunny weather under red union flags, banging drums and blowing whistles, was combative.

“If we don’t have a result (from talks) by Pentecost, then there will be a strike ballot and strike,” said Berthold Huber, referring to the May 27/28 holiday.

In Berlin, thousands marched through the government quarter to hear speeches at the central Brandenburg gate near the Reichstag parliament building. One brightly colored truck carried a banner reading: “It’s time to cough up the money.”

IG Metall Starbrite Tattoo Ink, with a membership of 3.6 million, held warning strikes at the weekend and is planning more for Wednesday in Germany’s industrial heartland of North Rhine-Westphalia.

If the major unions achieved pay rises anything near their demands, pressure for a policy response would grow.

There are signs German policymakers are already starting to worry about inflation, although it continues anchored around two percent. Last week, Economy Minister Philipp Roesler said the European Central Bank should refocus on price stability.

German Trade Unions, however, see their demands backed by strong corporate performance and record low post-unification unemployment of 6.7 percent, contrasting starkly with other euro zone countries such as Spain where unemployment has reached 24 percent after years of high wage rises and fiscal laxness.

“After years of pay cuts in real terms, after years of efforts to help the country through the crisis and helping save many companies and jobs, it’s our turn now,” said Michael Sommer, head of the DGB federation of German unions.

Sommer said in a speech in Stuttgart that public sector union Verdi had paved the way for wage hikes this year by securing a 6.3 percent pay rise over two years for its two million workers. The union leader said other unions would be fighting hard for similar deals in the weeks ahead.

“We need good pay increases this year and we’re going to fight for them,” he added. “We’re all aware of IG Metall’s fighting abilities and we’re all proud of that. But we can’t expect it to happen on its own. We’re going to have to fight.”

Huber, the leader of IG Metall, told a rally in the northern port city of Hamburg, that the offer from employers was a farce. He said Germany’s thriving engineering sector, which includes carmakers and many top exporters, can afford far more.

Last week Volkswagen reported a 10 percent increase if first quarter operating profit to 3.2 billion euros ($4.2 billion) [ID:n6E8FQ452]. Last year Europe’s largest carmaker had a record operating profit of 11.3 billion euros ($14.8 billion)

“The offer they made is a provocation,” Huber said and warned the union was ready to raise the number and scope of its industrial actions ahead of the next round of talks in mid-May.

Armin Schild, a regional IG Metall leader Professional Tattoo Machine, also called the employers offer “a provocation” on Sunday.

UNIONS WANT THEIR SHARE

The same message was heard at a rally in Chemnitz, where the Saxony leader of IG Metall Olivier Hoebel told a rally: “We want our share now.” Several hundred thousand people took part in 420 rallies around the country, according to union officials.

Some marchers carried signs with slogans such as “Austerity in Europe means unemployed youth in Europe” or “it’s time for a minimum wage in Germany.

The modest wage increases in the last decade have boosted Germany’s competitiveness but they are also sometimes blamed by economists for contributing to imbalances in Europe that have exacerbated the euro zone crisis.

Between 2000 and 2007, nominal compensation in Germany grew by a mere 1 percent per year on average compared with 2.7 percent in the euro zone. German wages rose more strongly in 2011 but by a still modest 1.5 percent average.

That was also below Germany’s 2 percent inflation rate.

Pay increases in this year’s wage rounds have been higher than in many years. Deutsche Telekom agreed to a 6.5-percent pay rise over the next two years for the 17,000 staff at its Bonn headquarters but the company and unions are still in talks over pay at its larger units with some 79,000 workers.

Chancellor Angela Merkel, with an eye on next year’s election, also signaled her support for a labor union demand calling for minimum wages for sectors in Germany that don’t already have one.

Sommer said in his speech in Stuttgart that a quarter of the German population is being forced to get by on “starvation-level wages” because there is no general minimum wage. Unions are demanding a minimum wage of 8.50 euros.

The minimum wage reversal is the latest example of Merkel co-opting the policies of the centre-left Social Democrats and Greens to bolster her party’s popularity with centrist voters.

Merkel told the Hamburger Abendblatt daily that she wanted to “put an end to the practice where some workers have to accept lowest possible wages.”

Union demands for stronger wage increases after a decade of restraint have also been backed by Merkel’s Labour Minister Ursula von der Leyen. In February she violated an informal ban on government intervention in wage talks by calling for pay raises of more than 2 percent.

“Now that…German corporate profits are strong Top Tattoo Guns, it’s time for workers to get a share of that,” von der Leyen said.

Israel – First Rifts In New Coalition over Draft E

Israel – The first rifts in Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s expanded coalition emerged just a day after the Israeli leader brought the main opposition party into his government Discount Marc Jacobs Dresses, with religious and secular parties exchanging threats Wednesday over draft exemptions for ultra-Orthodox Jews.

Israel’s Supreme Court has ordered the government to halt the exemptions, which have allowed tens of thousands of ultra-religious men to skip compulsory military service and instead spend their days in subsidized religious studies.

The exemptions have infuriated secular Israelis, who say it is unfair that they have to risk their lives in the military while the religious study.

The dispute was a key factor in Netanyahu’s surprising decision Tuesday to shore up his coalition by bringing in the Kadima Party.

Speaking to the Army Radio station, lawmaker Yitzhak Cohen of the religious Shas Party said Wednesday that “it’s an illusion” to expect a court decision would force seminary students to serve in the military. Moshe Gafni Buy White Herve leger, a leader in the ultra-Orthodox United Torah Judaism Party, warned of a brewing “cultural civil war.”

But Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman, leader of the fiercely secular Yisrael Beitenu Party, said there could be no “foot dragging” on the matter. Lieberman’s plan to push legislation ending the exemptions helped spark the coalition crisis that resulted in Tuesday’s deal.

Unable to bridge the differences over the draft exemptions, Netanyahu on Monday said he would call early parliamentary elections in September, more than a year ahead of schedule. But in a surprising turnaround, he subsequently reached a deal with Kadima overnight Tuesday that made elections unnecessary.

Netanyahu now presides over a supermajority of 94 members in the 120-seat parliament, meaning that neither the ultra-Orthodox nor Yisrael Beitenu can rob him of his parliamentary majority any more. Both factions, each with about 15 lawmakers, remain in the coalition.

At a news conference Tuesday, both Netanyahu and Kadima leader Shaul Mofaz, a former military chief, pledged to find a fair solution to the draft issue.

The draft is just one of several contentious issues looming for the government. Another is the matter of Jewish settlements in territories Palestinians claim for their future state.

The Supreme Court has ordered the government to dismantle a pair of settlement outposts found to be built illegally in the West Bank. Hard-liners in the coalition oppose any move against the settlers, and still hope to thwart the planned demolitions by passing new legislation that would legalize the outposts.

Lieberman called the outpost issue a “test” for the government.

“I have no doubt the prime minister will do what all the elements of the coalition expect of him,” he said.

Italian Turbine-Powered Calling Card For A New Era…And A New Maserati Quattroporte? Where buy best Replica Wyler Watches

The global meltdown that boiled to the surface in 2008 was really hard on a lot of car companies Replica Panerai Watches, but it was categorically horrendous for the tradition of Italian car craftsmanship out of Turin.

Of the three big players left in the traditional Italian design mecca – Italdesign Giugiaro Tonino Lamborghini Replica Watches, Bertone and Pininfarina – only Giugiaro has managed to avoid administrative takeover of its debts and assets by working out a major deal with longtime allies Volkswagen to sell them 90.1 percent of the firm. Both Bertone and Pininfarina are currently trusted to oversee their own operations but are nonetheless bonded to pay off significant operational debts to Italian banks after having hammered out merciful sweetheart low-interest deals. Neither has succeeded in closing mutually agreeable VW-style takeover bids, but both would probably prefer not doing so anyway.

The Geneva Motor Show has been treated as Italy’s (and my) hometown gig ever since the once wonderful Turin auto show fizzled away in 2002. One of the great spectacles of the Swiss salon is seeing the three major houses unveil their trinkets to the press Where find Replica Bell & Ross Watches, their stands traditionally placed side-by-side for maximum effect.
